Suffering from hardship and ennui, the first-person narrator barely manages to land a job as a journalist for a newspaper but his hardships and ennui do not subside. The narrator hates people at the newspaper, and his paychecks don't come on time. Having been unable to pay the rent for several months, he is in a conflict with his landlord, and he fights with his wife over not earning enough money. He walks out of his house and spends the night elsewhere. The next day, he returns home with rice and meat he bought upon receiving his paycheck, yet he feels depressed when he sees his family be happy about the food.
