Plot

Korean-American June leaves for Europe in search of her son, Nicholas. As a child, June grew up in an orphanage in the US after losing her entire family in the Korean War. There, she meets Hector, an American soldier who becomes a figure of comfort. Hector also suffers from his memories of the many deaths he witnessed during the Korean War. Meanwhile, Sylvie, wife of the missionary in charge of the orphanage, loses her parents during the Manchurian Incident while conducting missionary work.

2013년에 한국어로 번역, 출간된 이창래의 장편소설이다. 원제는 <The Surrendered>이다. 한국전쟁을 배경으로 이루어진 세 사람의 인연을 이야기한다. 역사적 사회적 이유로 미국으로 이민을 간 인물 '준'을 중심으로 하여 전쟁에 대한 철학적 사유를 풀어나간다.

This novel by Lee Chang-rae was translated and published in Korean in 2013. It tells the story of three individuals who are all scarred by the Korean War in some way. Focusing on June, who emigrated to the United States for social and historical reasons, the book unravels the philosophical reasons for war.
