Plot

After retiring from his landscaping business, which he used to run with his father and uncle, Italian-American Jerry Battle spends time flying his small airplane. His late wife, a Korean-American woman, drowned more than 20 years ago while swimming drunk in their pool, and since then he has been involved with his girlfriend, the Puerto Rican nurse Rita. His daughter has received a doctorate degree from Stanford University and is about to get married; his son, Jack, has taken over Jerry’s business; his father is now in a luxurious assisted living facility. However, Rita leaves him for another man, while Jerry’s father goes missing; his son is running the business aground, and his daughter, who discovers she is pregnant and has cancer, is refusing treatment.

This English-language novel by the Korean-American writer Lee Chang-rae was published in 2004. It revolves around the post-retirement life of an ordinary American man living in Long Island, USA, and the slow disintegration of his family.
