This English-language novel by Richard E. Kim was first published in the United States in 1964, and a Korean translation was published in 1990. The author was the first Korean-American writer to be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the form of a thriller, the novel deals with the tragic outcome of the ideological conflict in Pyeongyang during the Korean War, and explores the themes of human existence and universal destiny.
