Plot

As a woman in her late 20s, the narrator is disappointed by the monotony of her daily life, and the fact that her current situation shows no sign of future improvement. She reaches the conclusion that, in order to be happy in Korean society, she needs to fulfil certain conditions, such as academic success, family connections, and money – all things she does not have. Realizing she will never find happiness and be free from anxiety if she continues to live in Korea, she decides to immigrate to Australia, a place unknown to her.

2015년에 출간된 장강명의 장편소설이다. 작품은 주인공이 갑자기 호주 이민을 결심하면서 시작된 여러가지 일들을 다루고 있다. 주인공은 한국사회에서 자신의 행복을 위해 할 수 있는 일이 없다는 판단에 이민을 결정하고 곧바로 실행에 옮긴다. 작가는 2000년대를 살아가는 청년들의 '행복론'을 통해 한국사회가 지닌 여러가지 문제점을 비판적으로 드러낸다.

This novel by Chang Kang-myoung was published in 2015. It follows a character who, thinking there is nothing she can do in Korea that will make her happy, resolves abruptly to immigrate to Australia – a decision she immediately goes about putting into action. Exploring theories of happiness prevalent among young millennials in the 2000s, the author takes a critical look at Korean society.
