Plot

During the Korean War, the anti-communists Geol, Gilju, and Hakgu are involved in many fights against the communists, even attacking the headquarters of the Communist Party, which they aim to eliminate. When a ceasefire is reached, however, and the Community Party disappears from South Korea, they no longer have an enemy to fight. The three men are jobless, drink every day, and lead dissipated lives picking fights for no reason and hassling people they encounter.

1956년 12월<사상계>에 발표한 선우휘의 단편소설이다. 작품은 한국전쟁 직후 한국사회의 반공이데올로기 광풍을 보통의 청년들을 대상으로 그리고 있다. 작품 속의 청년들은 전쟁이 휴전되고 남한에서 공산당이라는 적이 사라진 후 갈피를 못 잡는다. 한국사회가 나아갈 방향이 '반공'으로 정해졌지만 전쟁의 상처를 짊어진 사람들은 혼란스러운 시간을 보낸다.

This short story by Sunwoo Hwi was published in Sasanggye: World of Thought in December 1956. It depicts the frenzy of anti-communist ideology among ordinary youth in Korean society during the time of the Korean War. At the end of the war, the young people in the novel become lost and directionless when the enemy called the Communist Party disappears from South Korea.
