Plot

Heo Sang-gu, a newspaper cartoonist, notices the smell of toxic gas one day, and begins to search for its source. The smell grows worse when Heo hears Mrs. Haenam’s muttering and weeping from inside her apartment, where she has been waiting for her missing son for four years. However, nobody else seems to have noticed the gas, and Sang-gu undergoes psychiatric evaluation.

1989년 출간된 임철우의 소설집<직선과 독가스>에 수록된 단편소설이다. 2013년 바이링궐에디션으로 출간되었다. 작품은 주인공의 독백을 통해 1980년 광주의 비극을 극대화시키고, 감금과 실종으로 역사 속에서 사라진 사람들의 서사를 재구성하고 있다.

Straight Lines and Poison Gas by Lim Chul-woo was first published in 1989 as part of his eponymous collection of short stories. In 2013 it was reissued as a volume of the Asia Publishers Bi-lingual Edition Modern Korean Literature collection. 
Through the main character’s monologues, the novel retells the tragedy of the Gwangju Uprising in 1980, reconstructing the narratives of those who were imprisoned and disappeared from history.
