Une fillette quitte la campagne pour un port détruit par la guerre, un "quartier chinois". Parmi les maisons croulantes, les gosses pouilleux voleurs de charbon ou les "putes à Yankee", elle affronte la vie, passe du statut de l'enfance à celui de femme. Dans "La Cour de l'enfance", une autre fillette est ébranlée par l'absence du père, parti à la guerre.
