Plot

The narrator hears from Gwon that his friend Yeong-hae passed away last fall, near Bohyeonsa Temple in Daegwallyeong. The news reminds the narrator of a woman he met at the temple. She had come to the temple in her mourning clothes after her dead husband appeared in her dream. The narrator had comforted her and driven her to Gyeongpo. The narrator remembers the promise Yeong-hae had made to him in high school. Yeong-hae had told the narrator that he would give him what was most precious to him when he died. The narrator realizes that the woman he met at the temple is Yeong-hae's wife.

This is a short story by Lee Soon-won published in Hanguk munhak (Korean Literature) in 1996. It tells the story of a mysterious encounter that occurred through the death of the protagonist’s friend. Through the setting of Daegwallyeong and Gyeongpo Lake, this work alludes to the path between life and death, between the world and the afterlife.
