Plot

When the employees complain about the part-time worker Seong Hye-mi, the Korean president of a small foreign company gives orders to Eun-yeong, a middle-level executive, to fire Hye-mi. It is difficult for Eun-yeong to understand the employees badmouthing a part-timer without any basis and her boss’s to dismiss her, but Eun-young tells Hye-mi to stop coming to work. Hye-mi takes issue by pointing out that the company did not take administrative measures such as employment insurance that the company should subscribe to and provide to workers. Afraid that her mistake will become known, Eun-yeong tries to bribe Hye-mi with her own money in an effort to resolve the issue.

This is a short story by Chang Kang-myoung, published in 2015 as the 13th work in the ASIA Publishers’ K-Fiction series. It is also included in the author's short story collection San jadeul (The Living) in 2019. The work describes the difficult working conditions for ordinary workers and the discussions surrounding the revision of the labor law through the author’s sharp gaze. It is particularly interesting that the author shows a twist that accurately reverses the conventional power dynamics between a company executive and a part-time employee.
