Seven-year-old Mu-do goes to a slaughterhouse with his friend Hui-ja and witnesses Park Sul killing Chil-seong's father. Mu-do once saw his mother having an affair with Park Sul, and feels that this incident is related to that affair. A few days later, Hui-ja's uncle is identified as a suspect, and Mu-do goes to the police station and states that Park Sul is the killer. Mu-do becomes a hero in the village, but he gets a beating from his mother. When his younger Sun-do only watches without interfering, Mu-do comes to hate Sun-do. Shortly thereafter, Mu-do has a swimming match with Sun-do, and when Sun-do is unable to get out of the waters, Mu-do lets him drown. Soon Sun-do's body is found, and Mu-do realizes that he can no longer stay in this village due to his mother's abuse and the gazes of the villagers.
