Plot

Park Min-uk begins to reminisce about the past at the grave of Yun Gyeong, who died in the Vietnam War. Min-uk is frustrated as he witnesses corruption in the military, his friends who are becoming depraved in the changing reality, corruption of lawmakers, and a society with a broken order from fraudulent elections. In the face of Yun Gyeong’s death and Jun-hak’s defection to North Korea, Min-uk ponders the meaning of existence and persevering to the end in Korean society.

This is a novel by Shin Sang-Ung, published in 1976, after it was serialized in Changjakgwa bipyeong (Creation and Criticism) in 1972. In 1973, it won the 6th Hankook Ilbo Literary Award. The author provides an in-depth portrayal of the various issues that are deemed national tragedies in contemporary Korean history, from Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, which took place on August 15, 1945; the Korean War; the April 19 Revolution; and the May 16 coup. At the time of the novel’s serialization in 1972, the last installment was suspended from publication due to the declaration of martial law.

월남전에서 전사한 윤경의 무덤에서 박민욱은 회상에 잠긴다. 민욱은 군 부대의 부정부패, 현실의 변화에 따라 타락해가는 친구들, 국회의원들의 비리, 부정선거로 인해 질서가 무너진 사회 등을 경험하면서 좌절한다. 특히 민욱은 친구인 준학의 월북과 윤경의 죽음 등을 계기로 한국사회에서 끝까지 버티는 것 그리고 존재의 의미에 대해 고민한다.
