Plot

Woo-hyeon's mother gave up her first love due to the circumstances of the times and lives with her current husband. Father stays with Mother, who is unable to forget her first love, and takes care of Woo-hyeon, who is not his own son. Then Woo-hyeon has a seizure after losing both legs in the army and lives like an animal. Mother wanders through the red light district, searching for Woo-hyeon. Meanwhile, Woo-hyeon’s younger brother Ki-hyeon falls in love with Woo-hyeon’s ex-girlfriend, Soon-mee, and marries her. But when Soon-mee finds out that Ki-hyeon takes Woo-hyeon to brothels, she asks Ki-hyeon to disguise her as a prostitute and take her to Woo-hyeon. They all give up their love and lives like giving trees.

This is a novel by Lee Seung-U, published in 2000. In this novel, plants are in a state that is achieved beyond animalistic desires. The characters in the novel show transcendental love, in which everyone reduces their own desires and benefits others by giving up what is their own.

2000년에 출간된 이승우의 장편소설이다. 이 소설에서 식물은 동물성의 욕망을 넘어서는 지점이다. 소설의 인물들은 모두가 자신의 욕망을 낮추고, 나의 것을 포기함으로써 타자를 이롭게 하는 초월적 사랑을 보여준다.

Énigmatique et pénétrante, La Vie rêvée des plantes irradie d’un mélange déroutant de délicatesse et de violence bestiale. Contraint d’espionner sa propre mère pour un mystérieux commanditaire, Kihyon est confronté à d’obscurs secrets de famille. Par tous les moyens, il tente de réparer les blessures du passé, entre un père réfugié dans la culture des plantes et un grand frère adoré et jalousé, amputé des deux jambes à l’armée. La folle passion de Kihyon pour l’ancienne petite amie de son frère complique la situation…
Écrire un livre, dit Lee Seung-U, c’est « entrer dans la vase ». Ce récit, cette confession, lourde de culpabilité et d’espoir insensé, nous plonge dans les formes les plus crues et les plus élevées de l’amour.
