Plot

Ji-yeong works as a teacher at a middle school in the rural village near the 38th Parallel. At the outbreak of the Korean War, she returns to Seoul. However, her husband Gi-seok is taken by the ROK army, and Ji-yeong takes care of her mother-in-law and children. Meanwhile, Gi-seok's older brother Gi-hun, who is a Communist Party official, disappears while working as a communist partisan in an attempt to put his ideology to practice.

This is a novel by Pak Kyongni, published by Hyeonamsa in 1964. Through the main characters Ji-yeong and Gi-hun, it shows people's sorrow and the futility of war. This novel is regarded as a masterpiece among war literature, and it earned Pak the 2nd Korean Women's Literature Award in 1965.

1964년 현암사에서 간행된 박경리의 장편소설이다. 주인공 지영과 기훈을 통해 민중의 애환과 전쟁의 허망함을 보여준다. 전쟁문학 중에서도 수작으로 평가받고 있으며, 1965년 제2회 한국여류문학상을 수상했다.
