Plot

Saimdang did not stop writing poetry even if no one recognized her for her poems in the feudal Joseon society. Saimdang also did not give up on her roles of wife, mother, and daughter, as well as life as a poet, never doubting that taking on all those roles was her way of protecting herself. Saimdang, now in his mid-40s, is bitter to learn that her life was about struggling to balance her passion for art and her rationality telling her to repress her passion.

This is a novel by Kwon Ji-ye, published in 2008. It tells the story of Saimdang, a representative artist of the Joseon Dynasty. Through the author's imagination about the real life of Saimdang, it tells the story of a woman who wanted to express herself as she struggled to juggle her identities as a woman, mother, wife of a scholar-official, and artist in the feudal Joseon society. When the revised edition was published in 2016, the name “Saimdang” was used, unlike in the previous edition, in an effort to highlight the theme the author wanted to convey.

2008년에 출간된 권지예의 장편소설이다. 조선시대 대표적인 예술가인 사임당을 모티프로 쓴 소설이다. 실제 사임당의 삶에 작가의 상상력을 더해, 봉건적인 조선사회에서 여성, 어머니, 사대부의 아내, 예술가 등 중첩되는 정체성 속에서 자신의 목소리를 내고자 했던 한 여성의 이야기를 들려준다. 2016년에 개정판을 출간하면서 초판에서 사용하지 않았던 '사임당'이라는 이름을 사용하여 작가가 전달하고자 한 주제를 부각시켰다.
