Plot

Singh learns Korean from his Korean wife, and his wife learns English from Singh. By learning languages that are unfamiliar to themselves, they try to understand each other. Singh becomes acquainted with the narrator by chance, and the three of them start communicating in languages that they are not fluent in. Their conversations seem strained and limited, but their thoughts and feelings are shared, giving warm strength to each other.

This is a short story from Kim Yeonsu’s short story collection Segyeui kkeut yeojachingu (Girlfriend at the End of the World), published in 2009. Through the process of communication between people who are not fluent in Korean or English, this story voices the dangers of one-way communication and its meaning.
