Plot

The protagonist, Lee Su-ho, is commissioned to write an essay that helps to understand the short story “Memilkkot pil muryeop (When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom).” As he writes the essay, he reminisces about his childhood. As a child, Su-ho is adopted  by his uncle, who is unable to have children, but he doesn’t acknowledge his uncle as his father because he is embarrassed of his uncle for having a mule. Hurt by Su-ho's rejection, Su-ho’s uncle leaves home. Now as an adult, Su-ho seeks out his uncle, and as they walk through buckwheat fields together, he finally calls his uncle “father.”

This is a novel by Lee Soon-won, published in the first issue of Sangsang in the spring of 1996. It has a similar composition to Lee Hyoseok’s “Memilkkot pil muryeop (When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom),” which is used as a motif. The author uses the mule that the protagonist rejects as a metaphorical representation of the protagonist’s uncle, who falls short of an ideal father figure. This short story deals with the growth of a boy by forming ga relationship with a father figure.
