Plot

Chang-soe, a good-natured peasant, loses his wife to Counselor Kim, a wealthy local proprietor in Mireuk-dong, and is beaten to a pulp. Full of resentment, Chang-soe joins the Donghak movement and becomes the leader of a group. He returns to the village and captures Counselor Kim and Advisor Pak (another member of the local gentry), who were harassing the villagers. Upon hearing the news of their capture, villagers set out to kill them with their own hands, but Chang-soe reveals his identity and calms them down. At this point, a military officer appears and the crowd disperses. Taking advantage of the chaos, Kim’s daughter Mi-yon and Pak’s son Il-yang, rescue their fathers.

This is a novel by Lee Mu-young, serialized in Hanseong ilbo in 1950. It was originally planned as a five-part novel but remains incomplete. Set against various events in Korean history, from the Donghak Movement to the March 1st Independence Movement, this novel vividly depicts the struggles of peasants in rural Korea.
